BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe or 740i short wheelbase?

Earlier this month BMW unveiled their first four-door coupe: the 6 Series Gran Coupe. The 6 Series Gran Coupe goes on sale in the U.S. in June 2012 and will be offered as three distinct models: BMW 640i, 650i and 650i xDrive (the latter two launching in late summer 2012).
With a pricing point and dimensions similar to the entry-level 7 Series short wheelbase, the choices for buyers are becoming more interesting. In our opinion, the two vehicles cater to different demographics, but nonetheless, an overlap will occur at some point. Both vehicles are optioned and limited the same way, and the base price will be in the same ballpark.
But let’s have a closer look.

BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe
The 4+1 seat addition to the 6 Series line combines stunning proportions, design and driving dynamics of the 6 Series Coupe with interior room and amenities for up to five passengers. The 6 Series Gran Coupe will cater to buyers looking for a sporty and sleek-looking BMW without sacrificing interior space and storage; think along the line of hipsters with bespoked tailor suits and with a sense of appreciation for luxury and design. We believe the 6 Series Gran Coupe will become a usual presence at valet parking in cities like New York, Los Angeles or Miami.

BMW 7 Series SWB
The longer, but sleeker and muscular new 7 Series came to market in 2009 to correct some of the shortcoming of the previous generation 7 Series. As our own Hugo Becker points out, the 7 Series is a mature sedan and a car for rear passengers. The buyers’ demographic for the 7 Series is also quite different from the 6 Series Coupe and now the new 6 Series Gran Coupe, with your usual driver identified among corporate executives, political dignitaries, A list celebrities, or anyone with money that enjoys the ultimate luxury and sportiness in a BMW.

Dimensions
Now let’s have a look at the dimensions of the two models.
With a length of 197 inches (5,007 mm) and wheelbase of 116.8 inches (2,968 mm), the 6 Series Gran Coupe is 4.4 inches (111 mm) longer than 6 Series Coupe model. The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is also 74.6 inches (1,894 mm) wide and stands 54.8 inches (1,392 mm) in height.  On the other hand, the BMW 7 Series short wheelbase measures 199.7 in (5,072 mm) in length, 74.9 in (1,902 mm) width and has a height of 58.2 in (1,479 mm). The 7 Series SWB has a wheelbase of 120.9 inches.
Both models are nearly identical in width and separated by 2 inches in length, with the dimensions advantage clearly going to the 7 Series.
The longer wheelbase gives the 7 Series more rear room for passengers, as well as a bigger trunk space.
Pricing
The entry-level 740i model starts in the U.S. at $71,000. The 640i Coupe went on sale this Fall with an MSRP of $73,600. BMW has yet to reveal the pricing for the 6 Series Gran Coupe, but we anticipate the base price for the 640i GC to fall between $75,000 and $79,000.

Caught cruising around with the top down

Here are the latest spy shots of the upcoming 2012 BMW M6 Cabrio, now caught cruising around with the top down. As soon as the driver encounters our spy photographer, he puts the top up in an effort to hide the 6-Series' adapted interior with M logos and special trim.

As seen in previous spy shots, the camo is just hiding the M-series body kit which we can better make out without the rest of the visual obstructions.

Under the hood of this next-generation F12 M6 Cabrio will have the same power plant in the new M5 (F10) - a 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 tuned to an output of 560 PS (412 kW / 552 hp) and 680 Nm (502 lb-ft) of torque. Transmission will be the 7-speed DCT Drivelogic double-clutch gearbox.

BMW X3-2011

For the all new second generation 2011 BMW X3, German tuner AC Schnitzer is starting with a modest tuning package that focuses on subtle styling accessories and modest performance upgrades.

Starting under the hood, AC Schnitzer gives the X3 xDrive20d a decent bump in horsepower from 184 to 218 PS (160 kW / 215 bhp) while a performance upgrade for the X3 xDrive30d is currently under development. Also being developed is a stainless steel sports exhaust systems for the 2.8i and 3.5i 6-cylinder petrol models.

For the styling kit, which has been crash tested, AC Schnitzer adds a front spoiler, the rear roof spoiler and the AC Schnitzer protective film for the rear skirt. As seen in the video, the front spoiler maintains its form quite well while allowing for collision absorption of a pedestrian.

Inside AC Schnitzer provides many accesories such as an AC Schnitzer sports airbag steering wheel, aluminium gear knobs with digital gear display, i-Drive controller aluminium cover, aluminium pedal set and AC Schnitzer velours foot mats.

For the suspension, a selection of wheels sets can be capped off with a sports spring kit. Wheels sets include Type VIII forged racing rims in 22 inch, or Type VII racing rims in BiColor or silver in 22 inch. One-piece rims of Type VI (BiColor), Type VIII (BiColor) and Type IV (BiColor or Silver) are also available in sizes 18, 19 or 20 inch. Forged alloy wheels Type V in 20 inch are also part of the range.

6-Series Gran Coupe

With the Frankfurt Motor Show just around the corner, BMW is wrapping up development on the 6-Series Gran Coupe. Unlike yesterday's prototype, this particular model is outfitted with the M-Package. The car appears to have an aggressive front fascia, revised side skirts, a modified rear bumper and unique alloy wheels. Since the M-Package is more about styling than performance, we can expect it to be offered on the full range of 6-Series Gran Coupes. Notable petrol options are slated to include a 300 hp (224 kW / 304 PS) 3.0-liter inline-six and a 400 hp (298 kW / 406 PS) 4.4-liter V8. On the diesel side, we can expect two 3.0-liter units rated at 204 hp (152 kW / 207 PS) and 245 hp (183 kW / 248 PS).

Features the 6-Series Convertible & Vision Efficient Dynamics concept

BMW enjoyed a short stint as James Bond's ride of choice, but the brand is returning to the big screen in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

Set to hit movie theaters in December, the latest installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise follows Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) as he tries to capture terrorists who bombed the Kremlin. Over the course of the film, the BMW 6-Series Convertible and Vision Efficient Dynamics concept get cameos in an attempt to create marketing buzz.

According to Ian Robertson, BMW AG Board Member for Sales and Marketing, "We are thrilled to be involved again in another Hollywood Blockbuster. The BMW Group leads the way in developing future mobility with a focus on sustainability. One great example is the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car which will be presented in the film."

Highlights of the new BMW M5 Press Release

The V-10 M5 is dead – long live the turbo V8. Or something to that effect. The glorious S85 5 liter V10, that rev’d to 8250 RPM is no more. The E60 M5 was the first production sedan to utilize a V10. And as good as the E39 M5 was, the E60 was an order of magnitude better. In fact it was really too powerful and capable for most drivers. However, BMW has moved on with the new F10 M5 and in the process they’ve replaced the high revving V10 with a turbo V8.
So is the new engine better than the V10. Well, it’s certainly more powerful and has gobs more torque available right off idle. If numbers mean anything then it’s better because it’s quicker to 100 kmh than the E60 M5 (by about 10%). But that won’t stop the wailing and gnashing of teeth over the loss of another naturally aspirated engine from BMW’s lineup.

Just how much more torque does the new engine have than the V10, well how about 160 Nm more (that difference is more torque than the 1.6L engine in the Hyundai Accent produces for goodness sake). Plus, as we’ve said time and time again, ‘HP sells cars, torque wins races’. And what BMW has done with their turbo motors is to arrange the torque to be delivered in a broad mesa from almost idle to 5,750 RPM. And the newest turbo V8 doesn’t disappoint, delivering all of its torque from 1500 to 5750 RPM. And when you calculate peak HP, it comes in at 560. Yes, that’s only about 10% more than the S85 produced, but the new V8 doesn’t rev as high (if it did, the HP figure would be off-the-charts).
Regardless, here are some of the highlights of the new F10 M5:
DCT gearbox, not an SMG, and potentially a manual for the US market (and for this one I’d opt for a DCT – yes, this manual tranny bigot believes that this engine is better served with a DCT). Oh and don’t forget to engage launch control!
The press release mentions M car thrust – boy howdy do they have that right, the car weighs just under two metric tons and the HP to weight figure comes out around 7.64 lbs per HP, and I always believe cars come alive at 10 lbs per HP, and then they get very dangerous for the inept soon after that.
This is the fifth generation M5 and you’d think the planets would align knowing it’s the fifth 5er. (The right mojo?)
As quick as the new 5er is, it gets a combined 9.9L/100 km mileage in the EU test cycle. (Suspect it will be in the low 20s MPG combined in the US test cycle.)
It’s gets all the mod cons (a UK’ism for modern conveniences) for the chassis, M-specific suspension (front and rear axle kinematics), M Servotronic steering, Dynamic Damper Control, DSC stability control system including M Dynamic Mode, and of course that wonderful active M rear diff.
The interior has been tweaked to provide the aggressive sportiness needed for an M car combined with the luxury buyers of the sedan will expect.
There is a wide range of driver assistance systems and mobility services available, from BMW ConnectedDrive, M-specific Head-Up Display (standard), Adaptive Headlights for standard xenon light, High-Beam Assistant, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition, Lane Change Warning System, Lane Departure Warning System, Surround View, Speed Limit Info, internet usage, extended integration of smartphones and music players, real-time traffic information and apps for receiving Web Radio and using Facebook and Twitter. And it’s the last feature that our M5manny will be lusting after.
There is a button in the center console that’s a three way switch between, ‘Efficient, Sport, and Sport Plus’, what’s the likelihood that for most US M5 drivers that will never be more than a two way switch?
More on the DCT tranny, it has three ‘D’ modes, from normal to ultra-sport and three manual modes, the ‘S’ modes, from comfort to the “you can’t shift this fast” (and you need to select S3 with stability control off to access ‘Launch Control Mode’).
Good golly, it just hit me, the bare chassis (suspension on a jig) I saw undergoing testing at the FIZ in April was probably the M5 chassis. It was the peculiar non-strut front setup 7er/5er chassis but it had hydraulically assisted power steering, not electrically assisted. That puzzled me at the time. So, yes, EPS is not ready for prime time according to M engineers, because the F10 M5 uses a hydraulically assisted rack!
Brakes are fixed six piston calipers – and they’re surrounded by 19 inch rims (a standard 265/40 up front and 295/40 rear).
And best of all – it doesn’t look like Dame Edna on steroids!
There’s a lot of additional material in the press release, but my first reaction is this is going to be one incredible driving machine. When do we get our hands on one?

A follow-up to the Frozen Gray coupe

BMW has announced plans to offer a special edition M3 Frozen Black Coupe in the United States.

Essentially a follow up to last year's Frozen Gray Coupe, the FB features a matte black exterior with gloss black accents, red brake calipers and 19-inch GTS wheels.

Inside, the cabin boasts Novillo leather upholstery, red contrast stitching and "carbon leather" trim. Other highlights include heated front seats, a premium audio system and GPS navigation.

Like the standard model, power comes from a 4.0-liter V8 engine that produces 414 hp (309 kW / 420 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. It is connected to an M Double Clutch Transmission (M-DCT) which enables the car to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

Production will be limited to 20 units and pricing starts at $79,650.

Coupe and Cabriolet variants of this newly introduced 1-Series generation will be badged as the 2-Series

British magazine Autocar has the scoop on what BMW is planning in terms of variants for the just introduced new generation 1-Series.

According to the report, BMW will offer the 1-Series in a total of six different body variants divided into two different build architectures.

First up is the current 5-door, RWD hatchback which will also offer up a 3-door hatch variant next year (2012).

Next up will be where the big changes start. A two-door coupe and cabriolet, also RWD, will be launched but under the new 2-Series badge. No 4-door sedan variant is planned but the model will feature a new 3.0 liter turbocharged six-cylinder power plant with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Finally, will come the variants built on a new FWD platform which will take the 1-Series into its next-generation as a mainly FWD model. In 2014, BMW will introduce the front-drive 1-Series GT and a 1-Series estate/wagon variants.

Autocar reports that the next generation of the 1-Series after that will come in around 2018/2019.

German tuner dials up output on the 3.0 liter twin-turbo to 405 PS (298 kW / 400 bhp) and 539 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque

German tuner Kelleners Sport has turned the BMW Z4 sDrive35is into a real rager.

The power upgrade involves a tuning of the 3.0 liter twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder unit up to an output of 405 PS (298 kW / 400 bhp) and 539 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque. That's quite a gain over the already impressive series output of 340 PS (250kW/ 335 bhp) and 450Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque - 500Nm (369 lb-ft) with overboost.

Wheels are available in 19-inch and 20-inch dimensions in either Hamburg or Berlin rims. Special lowering springs reduce the ride height of the Z4 by 20 mm at the front axle and 10 mm at the rear.

On the inside, the tuner adds a three-spoke sport steering wheel, aluminium pedals and foot rests along with velour floor mats. Bespoke interior finishes in leather with wood trims are also on offer by individual customer request.

Photos of the upcoming next-generation M5 leaked from a German car magazine

These leaked photos of the upcoming 2012 BMW (F10) M5 were first published in the German car magazine Auto Zeitung.

The photos show a very muscular M5 wearing 20-inch wheels and dressed in the color of Monte Carlo Blue. Feel free to compare the differences between this 'official' M5 and the M5 Concept from a couple of months ago.

Power output specs on the next M5 will be 560 PS (412 kW / 552 bhp) and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque from a twin-turbo 4.4 liter V8. Its 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint will be 4.4 seconds (0.3 seconds faster than E60 M5), 0 to 200 km/h (124 mph) in 13 seconds and top speed will be 305 km/h (189 mph) with the M-Drivers-Package. Transmission choices will be 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCT.

Official media release is expected early next week, with its first public appearance at the M Festival on June 23 at the Nürburgring.

Starting price in Germany will be around €100,000 ($140,000).

Video: BMW 5 Series and DVDinMotion

When driving, safety comes first and car companies have been working closely with the governing bodies to ensure that the constantly increasing technology in our cars do not become a distraction for the driver.
Automakers, including BMW, rolled out several speech-to-text or text-to-voice technologies that allow the drivers to perform some “office functions” without taking their eyes off the road. With the introduction of the latest CIC-based iDrive, several opportunities opened up. The increased resolution of the LCD display (1280×480) is offering more real estate for the new BMW Apps and even some aftermarket mods.
The fellows at European Auto Source discovered that the new iDrive system sports the unofficial capability to play DVD movies, while in motion. The feature is currently available only when the vehicle is in park mode.
With the introduction of CIC-based iDrive, most users immediately noticed an increased display resolution of the CIC display (1280×480), which is particularly noticeable in full screen mode. A hidden gem of the CIC based iDrive units was the capability to play DVD movies – a feature only available while the vehicle is in park.
Their latest mod VideoinMotion removes the 3 km/h video interlock and allows the passengers and kids to watch DVDs on a long trip. The company’s mod comes with a huge disclaimer advising against watching video content while driving.
Don’t forget: safety comes first!

Automobile Mag: “Can BMW Build A Real Sports Car?”

BMW sports cars…a topic that has been highly debated on BMWBLOG in the past five years. The topic become even more controversial back in 2008 when BMW unveiled the later-canceled CS Concept, a new sports car with proportions that would have placed it against high-end offerings from Porsche, Aston Martin, Maserati and others.
Instead of a new Z8 or CS Concept, BMW delivered in the last years the Z4, a good-looking vehicle but with extra weight and a hard rooftop. But the rumormill continued to churn and the idea of a smaller, driver-focused Z2 Roadster came to focus in the last couple of years. The Z2 was said to use for the first time a BMW front-wheel-drive architecture and to compete with vehicles like the highly successful Mazda Miata. Of course, the FWD rumor stirred up even more controversy in the BMW enthusiasts community.
Recently, BMW insiders said that the company is now considering a rear-wheel-drive platform that will align the new Z2 with BMW’s core values.

But, according to Automobile Magazine, a third viable option just came up among BMW officials: developing the car on the FWD platform, alongside the Mini Roadster and Coupe, but to take a page from Audi and make it four-wheel drive.
In a recent article, the US magazine outlines some of the pros and cons of the Z2 underpinning platform.
Initially, BMW planned to build the Z2 on the brand’s upcoming front-wheel-drive architecture. However, the mere rumor of a front-wheel-drive BMW sports car raised enough of an outcry within the enthusiast community that BMW officials are now considering two far better options. The first would be to continue developing the car on this platform, alongside the Mini Roadster and Coupe, but to take a page from Audi and make it four-wheel drive.Among the undisputed advantages of this strategy are (1) a short path to production (spring 2014 for a ragtop roadster, fall 2014 for a coupe version), (2) the traction bonus inherent to four-wheel drive, and (3) the economies of scale offered by hitching up to a high-volume architecture. On the debit side, it’s hard to ignore the usual weight, space, and cost penalties of adding driveshafts and other associated hardware.
Plan B scraps all that and pushes the launch back to 2015 or even 2016. That’s the bad news. The good news is that this route revolves around rear-wheel drive. The key is the next 1-series. Although the European-market hatchback 1-series will definitely move to front-wheel drive to compete better with the Volkswagen Golf and the like, BMW is now thinking that the coupe and the convertible should stay rear-wheel drive permanently and perhaps become the 2-series. (Indeed, the company just filed a trademark for the M2 name.) The Z2, of course, fits the new nomenclature to perfection and would share the 2-series platform. The Z2 would feature three different 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engines rated from 170 to 270 hp.

Leaked:Official patent designs of BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe

Carscoop has the BMW scoop today: the official patent designs of the upcoming BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. The leaked patent designs showcase the proportions and design cues of BMW’s four-dour coupe. Compared to the concept version unveiled last year, the drawings show a redesigned front and rear bumpers, which sport re-positioned and re-sized reflectors and different tail pipes.
6 Series Gran Coupe uses the same ‘backbone’ platform that underpins the current 5-series, 7-series and 5 GT. The car will offer the same mix of six- and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel engines as those cars, and an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
The BMW Gran Coupe is labeled as a 4-door coupe type of vehicle with a distinctive sporty character. The Gran Coupe has been designed to combine the abilities of a GT and a sports car. The roof is 100mm lower than the 7 Series models, and its rear quarters slightly more restricted. The concept carries the essence of brand values and the genes of BMW design into the future and the expectations are that these styling cues will turn up all over BMW range in the next few years. The sleek Gran Coupe retain iconic elements like the kidney-grille, Hofmeister kink and a less pronounced shark nose.

The demographic target for this vehicles is well defined already by some of BMW’s competitors: four-door coupe buyers looking for an elegant, sort of extravagant design, luxurious interior and driving performance. Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A7 fall under this segment as well.
BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe will make its official debut in 2012.

Spied:2012 BMW M5 with Manual Transmission

Not that we needed any visual confirmation, but the now long-time rumored 2012 BMW M5 with manual transmission has just been spotted on US soil. The fellows at InsideLine spied a F10 M5 prototype with a stick shift during the usual daily testing.
Between June 23 and 26th, 2011, BMW will host an M Festival to celebrate the 24hr race at the Nurburgring race track.
On this occasion, BMW invites fans around the world to have a look behind the scenes at the famous race and also visit the playground where every M car is developed and tested. The new 2012 BMW M5 will also be introduced at this event.Full details around the powerplant remain unknown, but we learned in the past that the 2012 BMW M5 is powered by an updated version of the S63 engine found in the BMW X5 M and X6 M. The 4.4-liter V8 twin-scroll powerplant will peak at somewhere in the 570-horsepower range and 530 lb-ft of torque. The 0-62 mph dash should take about 4.4 seconds,
The updated unit delivers both performance and efficiency significantly increased in comparison to the previous engine. Numerous drivetrain innovations and other enhancements have lead to a reduction in fuel consumption and emission levels by more than 25 percent.
The new engine is mated mated to a 7-speed M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic. The combination of the new engine with M Drivelogic is supplemented by an Auto Start Stop function. As seen in the spy photos above, manual option will be offered for US customers.
The super sporty sedan goes on sale in early 2012 and it is rumored to have a base price around $100,000 mark.

New BMW 3 Series - Facelift Revealed

After see The BMW launching his new 3 series at Malaysia from local newspaper today, it reminded me updated this blog which is long time not being updated.

Reading the article from the news, the new BMW 3 series comes with new design plus elegant facelift. The combination of exclusive and sporty made this 3 series become more popular than his other siblings ( 5 series, 7 series and others).

I also admitted that I really admired this car. Eventhough M3 and M5 are more powerful horsepower, I like the 3 series design which containing exclusiveness and sporty for young driver like me. Don't you miss too. The 'experience' guy also prefer using this car. It make them feel younger and the most important, the girls would snaring at you too..Hehe
